This year's Lantern Festival was a new experience for me and a great way to bask in some family-fun under the night sky..
I enjoy attending festivals of all types. From the vendors, to activities and food selections, there's always something for everyone. This year was my first time attending the Lantern Fest. My cousins who attended last year's event said it was a blast, so I was curious to check it out this time around. They traveled from out of town to join us and we were excited to have them here for the day.
We arrived at the festival right before dusk as the sky's colors faded into a beautiful backdrop. To set the scene, thousands of people come and gather around fire pits throughout the large fairground to roast marshmallows, enjoy live music and graze the food trucks before the main event.
After the sunset, it was on like Donkey Kong! Everyone in attendance received a lantern and began writing heartfelt quotes, messages, and pictures on them. Once the sky was dark, the artist onstage announced lantern launch would be taking place soon and that's when the true challenge began.
The trick to a good lantern launch is to first light the cardboard cutout in the center. When this small piece of cardboard catches fire, the next step is to hold the lantern down to the ground and let it fill with hot air. I experienced a lot of trial and error with this step but after a few tries my lantern finally filled and floated into the sky like a graceful firefly!
Imagine seeing thousands of people releasing their lanterns into the sky at the same time. It’s like something you’ve never seen before. The visual can't even be placed into words.. Beauty? Tranquility? Nothing quite describes the the wonder your eyes are soaking in. Simply incredible.
The lantern fest was definitely a night to remember and an experience I’ll never forget.
